Collegiate Section Announcements
Evening with Industry Sign Ups – SWE General Meeting
Evening with Industry is the annual networking banquet hosted by the Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers.
It's a unique event that encourages interaction between Cal Poly students and company representatives in a
relaxed atmosphere. Directly following the Winter Career Fair, it's the perfect opportunity to network and make
a personal connection with company representatives.
The event is on January 19th and begins at 6pm with a social hour where you can meet and mingle with
representatives from all attending companies. At 7pm, you will be seated at a company table of your choosing,
where you will enjoy a 3-course meal and have the opportunity to speak on a more personal level with the
representatives of your chosen company. Immediately following dinner, we will feature an awards ceremony to
honor the " Outstanding Women in Engineering" Award recipients, the "Most Supportive Professor," and our
scholarship recipients.
In addition to interacting with company representatives, each attending student will have his or her resume
included on a CD distributed to all attending companies.
You can purchase business cards for the event for the price of $2 for 10 cards.
Price: $10 for members, $25 for non-members, $30 to become a member and attend
Sign-ups begin at SWE's general meeting on Wednesday, January 4 at 6pm in Bonderson 197-104. You must
pay for your spot in order to reserve it - so bring cash with you. If you can't make it to the meeting, you can
still sign up for a spot at the remaining tables in the SWE office in Bldg 13, room 202. But sign up early,
because tables fill up quickly, and you don't want to miss your chance to sit with your preferred company!
Celebrate Women in Engineering – Wear Purple
Did you know the official SWE color is purple? Next Thursday (January 12th), show your support for women
in engineering by wearing purple! Meet up with SWE in front of Engineering IV at the beginning of UU hour
(11 am). We’ll take a group picture and celebrate women in engineering—it’ll be a great way to meet new
friends and show your support!
SWE Fights Winter Quarter: Nutrition
Is Winter Quarter making you feel a little blue? Join the Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers in our first
annual "SWE Fights Winter Quarter" series. Every other Tuesday, SWE will host an information session on
how to survive the coldest, rainiest, darkest quarter... The first information session, on Tuesday, January 10th in
Building 38 Room 204, will address a healthy diet. All are invited to attend. Questions? Contact
swemailcalpoly@gmail.com
SWE Sweatshirts!
Have you seen the new SWE Sweatshirts? Interested in ordering one? Sweatshirts are $40 and will be ordered
January7th. Please email Ashley Parry amparry@calpoly.edu if you are interested in ordering a sweatshirt.
Tour at Abbott Vascular
SWE will be attending a tour at Abbott Vascular in Temecula next Friday, January 13th. We will be shown
demonstrations of their products, get a tour of their facility, and receive FREE LUNCH with a panel of
engineers. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Abbott and the biomedical field, and to get your
questions answered by professional engineers! This is an all-day event. We will leave at 6am and return at
about 7pm. Volunteers to drive are needed, so if you have a car it would be great if you could help with this.
Gas will be reimbursed!! Please contact Julia Pollard at japollar@calpoly.edu with any questions or interest
ASAP! More information and sign-ups will be available at this week's SWE Meeting.
Hearst Castle Tour
Saturday, January 28, 9-11am This is your chance to get a tour of Hearst Castle for free! The guide will focus on the
architecture and structure of Hearst Castle. The tour is limited to twenty people, with some spots reserved for ARCE
students. If interested, please email ARCE Department Chair, Beth Schlacks, at eschlack@calpoly.edu.
On Campus Events/Opportunities
January Coffee and Careers: Women in STEM
January's Coffee and Careers will be focused on Women in STEM fields. Dr. Jane Lehr from the ethnic studies
department will be presenting. Dr. Lehr has conducted research on women in STEM and teaches the Gender, Race,
Science, and Technology course. It should be pretty awesome. Join us on Friday January 6th 11-12 in UU 219.

PEER 2012 Summer Research Internship for Undergraduates in Earthquake Engineering
The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) is pleased to offer unique opportunities for
outstanding undergraduate students to participate in state-of-the-art research focused on the theme of
Engineering Earthquake Resilient Communities.
Recent earthquakes in the US and around the world have repeatedly shown that earthquake resilience is
essential to building and sustaining urban communities. Earthquake resilience will play an increasingly
important role in the professions associated with earthquake hazard mitigation, and the ten-week 2012 PEER
Summer Internship Program will allow you to experience how many different engineering and social science
disciplines interact to research the broad goal of earthquake resilient communities.
During the summer of 2012, interns will be hosted at UC Berkeley, UC Davis and University of Washington to
conduct research projects in the fields of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and risk analysis.
Each participant will receive a stipend of $7,000, intended to cover summer housing and travel expenses to the
summer project location. PEER will provide additional compensation for travel to an Orientation Workshop at
UC Berkeley and to the 2012 PEER Annual Meeting.
The first application deadline is Tuesday February 21, 2012 at 8:00 am Pacific Time. Application review will
begin on February 21 and continue on a rolling basis until all internships are awarded. Applicants are strongly
encouraged to apply before the February 21st deadline.
