Collegiate Section Announcements
Evening with Industry

It's a unique event that encourages interaction between Cal Poly students and company representatives in a relaxed atmosphere. Directly following the Winter Career Fair, it's the perfect opportunity to network and make a personal connection with company representatives.

The event is on January 19th and begins at 6pm with a social hour where you can meet and mingle with
representatives from all attending companies. At 7pm, you will be seated at a company table of your choosing, where you will enjoy a 3-course meal and have the opportunity to speak on a more personal level with the representatives of your chosen company. Immediately following dinner, we will feature an awards ceremony to honor the " Outstanding Women in Engineering" Award recipients, the "Most Supportive Professor," and our scholarship recipients.

In addition to interacting with company representatives, each attending student will have his or her resume included on a CD distributed to all attending companies.

You can purchase business cards for the event for the price of $2 for 10 cards.

Price: $10 for members, $25 for non-members, $30 to become a member and attend

Stop by the SWE Office in Building 13 Room 202 Monday-Friday 9 am – 3 pm to reserve your seat!

SLO Hollaback!

Want to learn more about efforts in our community to end street  harassment?

"Hollaback! San Luis Obispo has the power to end street harassment"
  T 1/10, 4-5pm, UU 218

Street harassment is one of the most pervasive forms of social   violence in this country, and one of the least legislated against. It   is rarely reported, and is too often accepted as the ‘price you pay’  simply for being a woman, a person of color, an immigrant, dis/abled,   a poor person, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer in this   community. This workshop will introduce attendees to the local   movement to end street harassment, Hollaback! SLO.

The Hollaback! project uses mobile- and web-based reporting technology   to make patterns and instances of street harassment visible. Our goal   is to use the knowledge gained about where and when local street   harassment happens via real-time reports to our site –
slo.ihollaback.org – to facilitate community-wide efforts to end this   type of violence.

Activities will include discussion, analysis of the ways in which   street harassment functions as a gateway crime that normalizes gender,   race, class, dis/ability, religion, and sexual orientation-based
violence, street harassment and harassment interruption skits, and an   introduction to our website
slo.ihollaback.org and Hollaback! Droid   and Iphone apps.

 Please contact
slo@ihollaback.org with any questions.

Job and Internship Opportunities
Paid Summer Research Experiences for Aspiring Science and Mathematics Teachers

Applications are now available for students interested in applying to the 2012
STEM Teacher and Researcher (STAR) Program. This program is run by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on behalf of the California State University system in partnership with the US Department of Energy, NASA, NOAA, and NSF. This program places pre-service science and math teachers in paid summer research experiences at national laboratory facilities in California, Colorado, and Washington.

Eligibility
This unique opportunity is specifically for students who are committed to pursuing a career as a science or mathematics teacher (i.e., currently a pre-service teacher). If you are of at least Junior standing, have a strong background in science, mathematics, and/or engineering and also can demonstrate your commitment to becoming a science or math teacher, you are eligible.

The Experience
The central goal of the STAR program is to provide aspiring and early career science and mathematics teachers with the opportunity to engage in paid summer experiences involving laboratory research. STAR fellows will spend 9 weeks participating on research teams at a federal laboratory or research center. The research experience is integrated with weekly science teaching and education workshops to build and enhance teaching skills, career achievement and community building among STAR fellows, researchers, and faculty. STAR Fellows share their research and research-connected lesson plans with their colleagues at a closing conference involving all STAR participants.

Compensation
STAR fellows will be paid a $4,500 stipend for the 9-week program commitment. Housing costs, if needed, and some travel will also be supported.

Research Centers
Over the past five summers, STAR has successfully arranged 222 placements for students at 15 laboratory sites.

Important Dates
· STAR Live Informational Webinar from LLNL, Tuesday, January 17, 2012 (see STAR website for more)
· STAR Information Session/Open House: Friday, January 27th (at ARC; more info soon on STAR website)
· STAR Application Due Date (for all lab sites): Tuesday, January 31, 2012
· Summer Program Dates: Monday, June 11 - Saturday, August 11, 2012

Vanderbilt University NSF REU Program

The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) will be hosting a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site in nanoscale materials science and engineering May 30, 2011 to August 5, 2011.  Each student will work directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups on projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering and have access to the VINSE core laboratories, which are shared facilities available to all authorized users.  Participation in the program will provide students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineers collaboratively solve problems and create new scientific understanding.  All REU students will be housed on the Vanderbilt Commons in one of the ten residential halls on the Vanderbilt campus that were built in 2008 to house all first-year students.  The Vanderbilt campus is centrally located, being just one mile from downtown Nashville, which is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan mid-sized cities in the United States.

Highlights of the program include:

. Choose from ~ 20 projects available each year for 10 positions,  giving increased flexibility to match student interests.
. Receive a $5000 stipend, room and board, plus a $400 travel allowance to offset the cost of traveling to Nashville.
. Undergo informal training on scientific writing and giving oral presentations .
. Participate in optional outreach opportunities with local high school students.
. Enjoy weekly social activities and a closing banquet.
. Participate in a poster competition to receive a travel award to attend a national professional meeting to present their work.

We would greatly appreciate you bringing this opportunity to the attention of your talented and motivated undergraduate students looking for a summer research position. Students who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents majoring in science or engineering are eligible to apply to the REU program and students from underrepresented groups and institutions are strongly encouraged. Students are to be notified of their acceptance into the program by email by mid-March and  selections will be based primarily on academic standing and faculty recommendations.

The application deadline is February 15, 2012
.
