Most Supportive Professor Nominations
If there is a professor that you think goes above and beyond to support you in class, nominate them to receive SWE's annual Most Supportive Professor Award! The winning professor will be invited to EWI to accept his or her award. We want to encourage and thank our professors for their awesome efforts!
Nominations will be collected at the SWE meeting on Wednesday, November 2. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please email Sarah Kuehn at skuehn@calpoly.edu.

Women’s Shelter Canned Food Collection – Volunteer Opportunity
Come out and help SWE collect canned goods for the Woman's Shelter of San Luis Obispo! It's the beginning of the holiday season and its important to let those women know that they are not alone. We will have a table set up in front of Scolari’s on Marsh and California on Saturday, November 19th from 10 AM to 2 PM. Please feel free to stop by at anytime to add a small donation and volunteers are always welcome. Let's start the holidays off right by giving!

SWE Sweatshirts!
Have you seen the new SWE Sweatshirts? Interested in ordering one? Depending on how many people express interests, SWE sweatshirts could be $50, $40, or $30… Email Ashley Parry amparry@calpoly.edu if you are interested in ordering a sweatshirt. Final order will be made at the first meeting of Winter Quarter, so be sure and email Ashley ASAP!
High School Shadow
High School Shadow is occurring this Thursday and Friday (November 17th and 18th). High School Shadow gives high school students the opportunity to experience Cal Poly Engineering for a whole day and night. High school students will attend classes, eat on-campus, explore Cal Poly, and stay overnight in the SLNM dorms! We still need a few more OVERNIGHT hosts for High School Shadow (description below).
Overnight Volunteers: A high school student will spend the night in your dorm on November 17th-18th. Your job is mainly to house them and entertain them in the dorms for a night. We will need Overnight Volunteers from 8:30PM (November 17th) to 9AM (November 18th).

We also need people to speak at our Student Panel for High School Shadow on Friday (November 18th) at 10AM! It would be great if I could get one person from each engineering major to discuss their discipline for 5-10 minutes. Things to discuss would be: what your engineering field is, any interesting projects you have worked on at Cal Poly, and what courses you need to take for your major. If you are interested in being on the Student Panel, please contact me (information below).

MESA School Days
This Wednesday and Thursday November 16-17 Cal Poly will be hosting students from all over the area to come and participate in 45 minute labs. SWE will be hosting 2 labs Thursday 10:00-10:45am and 11:00-11:45am. They also need labs Wednesday 1:00-1:45pm and Thursday 1:00-1:45pm. If we can get volunteers free at that time we would love to help out the MESA program more! If you would like to volunteer at any of these times please email Melanie Seydel at outreach.assistant.swe@gmail.com.
SLO Children’s Museum
SWE is working with the Children’s Museum to host monthly activities for 1-2 hours. This program will be starting Winter Quarter, if you are interested in learning more about this opportunity or join the brainstorm team please email Maiya Bourland at maiyabourland@gmail.com.

UPPER CLASSMEN NEEDED for Team Tech

Team Tech is an interdisciplinary engineering competition host by Boeing. This year Team Tech is working with QL+ to build a device that converts a regular wheelchair into a powered one. Cal Poly has a history of success in Team Tech, winning 1st place the past 3 years.

ES 410: Global Engineering Winter 2012
Dear All,
As you all know, PASS is currently open and students begin registering next week! I have included a flyer that advertises a special topics course that I am offering again in Winter 2012: Global Engineering. Interested students, please contact Jane Lehr for more information if you have not met the ES 390 prerequisite. Note: While this course does not currently meet GE requirements, I am hopeful that my effort to have it offered as a D3 will be successful, and that it will be offered as such in Winter 2013.
ES 410: Global Engineering (Winter 2012, MW 10:10am-noon)
Cross-cultural, comparative analysis of what it means to be an engineer, do engineering work, the structure of engineering education; focus on relationships with other social, economic, political, legal, intellectual institutions; special attention to interlocking systems of gender, race, class, nation.

UCLA RIPS Summer Research Opportunity
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) runs a unique summer program for undergraduate students. The Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) provides an opportunity for exceptional students in math and related disciplines to work in teams on real world research projects proposed by a sponsor from industry or a national lab.
Sponsors have included Pixar, Microsoft, Symantec, Los Alamos, the Aerospace Corporation, Amgen, Arete, IBM, Standard & Poor's, Jet Propulsion Lab, and many others. The RIPS web site at http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/rips/ gives the full details including a link to the online application. We encourage all bright, young students to apply, especially women and minorities.
This is an educational and very exciting two month program near the heart of Los Angeles at one of the premiere educational institutions in the United States. If accepted the program covers the student’s travel, housing and most meals, and offers a generous stipend. Students immerse themselves in research and learn how to deal with real world problems.
In addition to RIPS in Los Angeles, IPAM will offer for the second time RIPS-Hong Kong in 2012 in partnership with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. This is an exciting opportunity for U.S. undergrads to work with students from Hong Kong / China on projects sponsored by companies based in the region. English is the only language required for participation. The format is the same as RIPS-LA; two American and two Chinese students will form a team.
The deadline for applications is February 12, 2012 . Please refer your students to the site and encourage them to apply. (Note: graduating seniors are eligible for all programs; international students may apply for RIPS-LA only).
